I was surprised at the answers I got from quite big sound contractors .
The question was : If you have talk show with 4 guess at the same time . If you want perfect sound balance and not having to ride the faders .
One told me about a microphone that had
such automatic properties.
One told me to use the gates on the mixers.
No one told me about the Altec Invention.
Tonight the company that does the grammys
has that piece of equipment in their inventory.
They are the heavy weight's in sound as far as TV LIVE broadcast goes.

This AGC is gaining in popularity.Talk shows like Oprah David Letterman use them. Even back up singers in rock concerts. Soon you won`t be able to leave home with out it.

I found a use for my Altec 1684 automatic mixers.
You can take the line out on the Back an patch it to a recording system.
PRESTO! 8 independent mic preamps, transformer coupled, with input trim and Phantom power.
To buy equivalent will cost hundreds, the 1684 goes for a song.

Theres a different type of auto mixer called priority ducking. Example: sports crowd ambiant noise goes up when commentator is not talking and vice versa. It took me 6 months to find this processor by BSS. It's used by all major US teams broadcast in the US. Not used in Toronto baseball match. Now I know why.
Ducking is used to lower the level of a microphone(s) and/or program material based on a source signal from another microphone, for the duration of the signal present at the source microphone. It restores the original level once the source signal has ceased. This is useful when a) program material needs to attenuate in order to accentuate the voice of a narrator, b) one microphone is used by a chairman or master of ceremonies, and needs to have priority over other mics and/or program material, or c) a paging mic must attenuate all other signals.
